INFINITI’s Project Black S Prototype

Based on the INFINITI Q60 sports coupe, INFINITI’s Project Black S is a testbed for new powertrain technology that could be deployed in a future INFINITI road car. The Project Black S Prototype first emerged during the 2017 Geneva design study and has evolved with many new developments. The prototype now has a new aero-effective and purposeful body design, weight reduction, motorsport-inspired interior and significant powertrain advancements.

INFINITI Project Black S

As an ongoing venture between INFINITI and the Renault Sport Formula One Team, Project Black S is helping designers and engineers explore the feasibility of a dual-hybrid powertrain that combines supersport performance and smart energy management. Current research includes the development of an electrified performance hybrid powertrain that recuperates heat and kinetic energy created during braking and acceleration. When perfected, this world’s first technology could transform the performance of future INFINITI’s road cars.

INFINITI Project Black S

To optimize performance the Project Black S has been designed with advanced aerodynamics for effective powertrain cooling and enhanced downforce. For reduced body weight, the Renault Sport Formula One Team replaced the Q60 body panels, such as the hood, fenders and roof, with lightweight carbon fiber panels similar to those of a Formula One race car. The prototype design also includes a high-tech rear wing with a similar aerodynamic profile to the Formula One Monza Wing. The result is a prototype vehicle that produces more power and accelerates more quickly than any INFINITI road car to date.

Further development of the Project Black S Prototype will continue through 2019. INFINITI’s ongoing research along with alliance partners such as the Renault Sport Forumla One Team, will undoubtedly render innovations in future automotive technology.
